Why every home needs art

From the first men in caves to the modern university student, we have always wanted something to decorate our walls. It is an innate desire, driven by our human love of beauty and subconscious understanding of what 'works.'

On the outside, the process appears simple: We see an empty wall, and we want to fill it. But the psychology behind the importance of art in a home goes far deeper than that initial base want.

The personal touch

Firstly, art is personal. We hang photographs of ourselves and our loved ones in our homes, along side prominently displayed books that we love and old Christmas and birthday cards from friends. Our homes are our own space, and we want that space to communicate who we are.

It is the reason that every house or apartment is not decorated with identical brown sofas and regimental white curtains. Even if it is a rental, there are still methods of personalising a space, be it through framed pictures on the bedside table, fairy lights draped across a desk, or posters stuck onto the wall.

Art is an eye-catching method of filling a blank space with something that defines you.

Something to reflect on

A work of art has the ability to provoke thoughts and curiosity. A print of a Van Gogh carries with it all the history of the original work, brightening up a space with the artist's thematic sense of excellence and beauty. Guests can pause, comment upon the piece, discuss the history behind it. When you are alone, it will remain present as a small beacon of culture, lighting up its surroundings with a chunk of historical lore.

Set the mood

Although only a few homes can successfully replicate the interior of a museum, a home with even only a few pieces of art can transform into a safe space. The floors can have rugs and furniture, but walls can only have art. Renaissance scenes, landscapes full of bales of hay, recreations of tragedies and comedies and romances - all can be stuffed within your safe space, establishing the aura of your home.

By using art as a focal point, you are breathing life into your home, and it is the life that you choose to define yourself with.
