Living Room Wall Art

Start with what's already in the room. Pull one or two colours from your cushions, rug or paint and look for a piece that repeats them; it makes the space feel finished rather than decorated. For a calm, layered room, choose soft neutrals and textured abstracts. To give a plain scheme some energy, choose one bold piece in a saturated colour and let it be the focal point. The most common mistake is art that's too small, which looks lost on the wall. As a rule, your art should be about two-thirds of the sofa's width (60–75%). For a 200 cm sofa, look for a single piece, or a set of prints, around 130–150 cm wide in total. Hang it so the bottom of the frame sits 15–25 cm above the back of the sofa, so the two read as one arrangement.

Framed prints suit a more tailored room: the frame and paper border add definition and pair well with other framed pieces in a gallery wall. Canvas has no glass, so there's no glare from windows or lamps, and its depth gives a softer, more painterly feel that works well at large sizes.
