Deep red and ochre tones unfold through expressive marks in this calm, sophisticated abstract composition. The character of Composition 1 comes from layered forms and expressive mark-making, used with restraint across the abstract composition. The eye moves between layered forms and open passages, allowing colour and mark-making to establish the structure of the piece. The original painting retains a strong focal presence while allowing quieter passages to give the composition room to breathe.
The visual language takes cues from colour, movement and the spontaneous language of contemporary abstraction. Red, yellow and black tones anchor the palette, with secondary notes adding nuance and depth rather than competing for attention. Changes in tone and intensity create visual depth, helping the composition feel layered rather than flat or overly decorative. Bold colour provides the focal energy, tempered by quieter areas that keep the overall piece refined rather than overpowering.
