How to measure for a picture frame
Measuring for a frame properly is the most important factor to ensure your photo or picture fits the frame well. By choosing the right frame size, you will ensure the picture looks as beautiful as it should in the frame when displayed.
Some of the considerations to make are:
- The height of your picture
- The length of your photo or artwork
- The depth of your picture
- Whether you would like to add a mount/passe-partout
- The space available to hang or display the picture
Once you know the answer to these five points, you will be able to choose the perfect sized frame for your picture. The overall size of your frame is the only thing that cannot be changed once you decide on a size. You can always choose to add a mount/passe-partout afterwards or even swap the photo with a new one if desired. So, getting the size right is one of the most important factors to ensure a good fit.
When measuring your picture, it’s always good to start by measuring the outer edges of the picture. This ensures your picture will fit in the frame without requiring any trimming. Then, you should measure the ‘picture size’, which means the actual size of the picture without any bleed/white border (if applicable).
